Tip Nine: Be Prepared

It's a simple truth: the more prepared you are, the more respect you will command. Take an actor, for example. The more he or she learns their lines and knows their stage markers, the more they can concentrate on creating a believable character.

You need to concentrate on building respect and professionalism. Be prepared:

  • Know the type of plane you are flying, emergency procedures, safety checks, location in your IH, demo assignment, silent review, etc... know this stuff cold.
  • Know the service procedures.
  • Know what supervisors can and cannot do.
  • Know exactly what the crew desk can and cannot do.
  • Know what can and cannot happen during irregular operations specific to the routes you are flying.
  • Know the details of the trip you are flying and the layover information, including:
    • Hotel Information
    • Ground Transportation Information
    • Medical Contact Information
    • Pickup Times
  • If you are a commuter, know your flight schedules, the gate agents on a first name basis, and an alternate means of transportation.

The more you know, the more people will come to you for answers. You will be sought after as the person 'who knows the answers'. And guess what, you'll start to feel more on top of your job. With that will come respect.
