UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO
"A NONINVASIVE INDEX OF THE DETRIMENTAL CARDIOPULMONARY EFFECTS OF SECOND-HAND SMOKE"

INVESTIGATORS:
Rita Redberg, MD
Warren Gold, MD
Mehrdad Arjomandi, MD

A. PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND

The investigators listed above are conducting a study to test whether exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke causes negative effects on your health. In particular, the investigators wish to find out whether secondhand tobacco smoke exposure causes heart or lung problems. This study is being partly funded by a grant from the Flight Attendants' Medical Research Initiative (FAMRI), a private non-profit organization founded to study the health effects of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke.

B. PROCEDURES

If you agree to be in this study, the following will happen:

1. You will fill out a brief questionnaire and have an interview.

2. Baseline (at rest) breathing tests will be performed on the same day. These tests evaluate lung function at rest and with exercise. The baseline breathing tests will take approximately 1 hour. If exercise breathing tests are done, they will take 2 hours.

3. The exercise tests will take about 2.5 hours to complete. A finger stick may be required to obtain a sample of blood (1/4 teaspoonful) to measure hemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin levels.

4. The results of your test will be reviewed with you by one of the investigators, and a follow-up clinic visit may be scheduled. These results will remain confidential. The results will only be disclosed to your own doctors at your request.

C. LOCATION

The study is being conducted at UCSF in San Francisco, California.

D. ELIGIBILITY

You are being asked to participate in this study because you are a healthy flight attendant over the age 40 with 5 years of flying experience.

E. COMPENSATION

If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will be paid $100 for your participation.  In addition, if you complete both the resting and the exercise tests, you will be paid an additional bonus of $50 for a total of $150.  In addition, you will receive a parking voucher and lunch vouchers.  Additionally, hotel accommodations for one night and transportation will be provided to our participants who reside outside of San Francisco Bay Area.
