Travelers still able to bring home wine — with a few adjustments

New airline rules banning most liquids and gels from carry-on luggage have made winery trips more complicated for those who want to take home a couple of bottles.

Many travelers used to take bottles of wine in their carry-on luggage to protect it from breakage and temperature — and save on the cost of shipping. Now bottles are banned, although there are some exceptions for duty-free liquor purchased in airports.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery's Kari Leitch said the Woodinville winery has seen an increase in visitors asking for specially insulated cardboard boxes for their wine purchases. Most plan to check the wine boxes at the airport as baggage, rather than shipping it and coping with the complicated interstate liquor-laws. The winery can legally ship its wine to only about half of American states, since some states are more restrictive than others.

However, Washington's liquor laws were changed earlier this year, easing restrictions and making it easier for residents to ship home wines they've purchased in other states, such as California. Since the new security rules were imposed, many California wineries are stocking more packing boxes; some have stopped charging for them.

The Transportation Security Administration does allow passengers to take sealed alcoholic beverages purchased at airport duty-free stores on board, but only if they are delivered directly onto the plane.

Passengers making connections from international to domestic flights must move their wine to their checked bags before departing on the domestic leg of the trip. There also are special rules for some airports, including Canadian ones where travelers preclear U.S. Customs. Get details at www.tsa.gov/travelers.
