JUNE 2006 TRAINING SCHEDULE AND LOCATIONS

The TSA Office of Law Enforcement/Federal Air Marshal Service (OLE/FAMS) is pleased to announce implementation of the newly revised Crew Member Self Defense Training (CMSDT) Program. Using feedback from crewmembers, air carriers, unions, and professional associations, OLE/FAMS has combined distributed learning technology with hands-on instruction to produce a training that is effective, less time-consuming, and more accessible to the participants.

During the month of June 2006, OLE/FAMS will offer the one-day CMSDT Program at community colleges in Atlanta GA, Dallas TX, Los Angeles CA, and Phoenix AZ. Beginning in July 2006, classes will be offered in seven additional locations: Charlotte NC, Chicago IL, Denver CO, Miami, FL, Philadelphia PA, San Francisco, CA, and Washington, DC (Alexandria, VA). A full schedule of classes for 2006 will be posted to the TSA web site.

OLE/FAMS is currently seeking participants for June classes at the locations listed at the end of this message. The following general information is provided for reference. Specific details are available from the community college points of contact listed for each location.

  • Both flight and cabin crewmembers are eligible to participate in CMSDT, as long as they are in active flight status.
  • The class is free; however, all travel, lodging, meals, and incidental expenses (if any) are the responsibility of the participant.
  • Per the Vision 100 - Century of Aviation Reauthorization Act, a crewmember enrolled in the CMSDT Program is not required to participate directly in the hands-on portion of the training. They may observe it instead.
  • Crewmembers must pre-register with the Point(s) of Contact listed for the community college at which they will attend the training.
  • Crewmembers must present their air carrier identification at the training site, along with one of the following: valid U.S. Driver's License; valid U.S. Passport, or valid Armed Forces Identification Card.
  • Crewmembers attending the June training classes will review an instructional DVD at the training site; complete a 25-question self-assessment, and then participate in or observe the hands-on portion of the training. The entire training program is expected to last approximately nine (9) hours.
  • A crewmember who successfully completes the CMSDT Program may repeat the training as many times as they would like. Crewmembers that have participated in the previous (three day) version of the training may also attend the new version. A crewmember that wishes to repeat the training each of the three days it is offered during June may do so as well.
  • A certificate will be mailed by the community college to each crewmember that successfully completes the training.

To enroll in a class, a crewmember should simply select a community college location from the list below and call the designated Point of Contact (POC). The POC will provide them with all necessary details and requirements for attendance, and will assist them in enrolling for the training date of your choice.
