May 24, 2006 -- Contributing to our Communities

Hi, it's Glenn, and it's Wednesday the 24th of May.  Today I'm joined on the call by Sonya Jackson, our director of Corporate Social Investment.

Every company has responsibilities to a wide set of stakeholders and constituents.  Just as we have obligations to the people who support our business -- customers, investors and employees -- we are also expected to participate in the life of the communities that we serve and that support us.  At United, the Corporate Social Investment group leads that effort on our behalf.

To tell you more about how we do that, I'll now turn the call over to Sonya.

Sonya, over to you.

Sonya:

Thanks, Glenn.

In Corporate Social Investment, we're focused on one very important idea: creating ways for our company and our employees to contribute to our communities.

Meeting that commitment comes alive in specific ways.  We look for opportunities to support the arts, to create a more level playing field for young people at risk, to volunteer and participate in the life of the communities we serve.

We provide that support after making careful, considered decisions about how we use the resources we have available.  We ensure that the tickets we donate, the time we spend and the money we give through The United Airlines Foundation count - both for United and the organizations we support.

Over the last couple of years, we have made much progress, with our focus first on Chicago, building relationships and identifying partnerships that make sense for us.

On May 14th, more than 2,000 employees, their families and friends from all over the United system walked and ran -- and raised an incredible $300,000 -- for Y-ME, an organization dedicated to the idea that no one should face breast cancer alone.  It was truly amazing to see so many United people together for such a meaningful -- and personal -- cause.  This is our second year at Y-ME, and we are committed to the cause because it is important to so many of you.

Coming up this fall, we're supporting another landmark event in Chicago.  The New York City Ballet is returning to the city for the first time in 26 years, and United donated the travel to bring them here.  The event is also giving us a great opportunity to give something back to our employees and premium Mileage Plus members, as we were able to offer them advance tickets for the performance.

While our participation in Chicago has been our first focus, we are now enthusiastically expanding our efforts to Denver and San Francisco.  On May 27th, we'll share in our first event with the San Francisco Opera, sponsoring their simulcast of Madame Butterfly in a downtown park.  As we finalized the arrangements, my colleague from the opera told me she felt the event will start a whole new civic tradition in San Francisco, and it's something we're very proud to be involved with.  One of the benefits for United from the event is that our brand will be in evidence throughout the evening.  In fact, we're showing our "Dragon" ad during the simulcast.

In Denver last weekend, United employees ran in and volunteered for the Colfax Marathon.  The marathon supported young people in the area and gave our employees a great opportunity to get involved in a new event for Denver.

An important benefit of all this work is a chance for United employees to enjoy our partnerships with the organizations we support, including the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the Denver Children's Museum -- through reduced admission prices, special events and other great deals.  If you want to see what's coming up, go to SkyNet and click on employee discounts for more information.  One amazing opportunity just around the corner in Chicago is tickets to the Tut exhibit at the Field.

Our work so far has shown that building relationships and "showing up" in our communities makes a big difference for us and for the people whom we support.  The sea of blue shirts at Y-ME and at the Colfax Marathon says it all -- the people of United are here and contributing to the events and institutions that are important in their communities.

Back to you, Glenn….

Glenn:

Thanks very much, Sonya.  And I could not agree more.  My wife, Jackie, and I joined Pete McDonald, the corporate chair of the Y-ME event, and everyone representing United at the race.  It was a terrific event -- all credit to the people of United, their families and friends who made the commitment to what turned out to be the biggest cause-related event in Chicago's history.  Ultimately, it's our participation in causes such as these that people in our communities appreciate and remember.  And it is that participation and commitment -- added to the work we do with our investors, our customers and our employees -- that define who we are as a company.

That's all for now.  I'll be talking to you again soon.  Until then, stay focused on our customers, on one another…and stay united.
