Hello, this is Jane Allen with an Update for Friday, April 14, 2006.

We had a dramatic example this week of how skillfully our flight attendants respond in an emergency situation. Flight 221 was departing Washington Dulles last Sunday afternoon when it aborted takeoff because of a reported fire in the number one engine. Thanks to this crew's extraordinary teamwork, they quickly evacuated the full A319 without serious injury to any passengers.

This is another reminder that safety remains our number one priority. And it was this crew's knowledge, skill and flawless execution of their safety responsibilities that led to a successful outcome in this emergency situation. I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to Washington-based flight attendants Karen Ingraham, Steffin McNeill and Clarice Rinker, as well as San Francisco-based jumpseater Sara Guillen, for all they did to ensure the well being of our passengers and your colleagues. The three Washington-based flight attendants are being treated for strains that occurred during the evacuation; however, thankfully, none of these injuries are serious. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

I also want to commend our pilots, who demonstrated tremendous skill in safely aborting the flight. Thanks to everyone for your exceptional work.

I know this has been an emotional week. The terrible events that took place on Flight 93 on September 11 are being covered in the media in horrific detail as a result of testimony in a Federal trial. In addition, commercials and previews for a new film about Flight 93 are being aired.

These words and images bring back painful memories and reminders of the colleagues, friends and loved ones that were affected by this tragedy. While none of us will ever forget what happened that day, we will all have very different and very personal reactions to these reminders. Some of us may find answers to questions we have held onto for five years. Others may be discovering more detail than they ever wanted to know.

Whatever your reaction, whatever your memory or emotion, please remember that we have resources and people we can all turn to for help. None of us should hesitate to contact United's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or AFA's EAP representatives. Many of us turned to these resources in the aftermath of September 11, and they are still there to help us now.

We will continue to keep those who were lost on that terrible day alive in our hearts and minds. We will never forget them.

That's all for today. Fly safely and I'll talk with you next week.
