Hello, this is Jane Allen with an Update for Friday, January 6, 2006 .
I want to thank everyone making this holiday travel season a successful one from an Onboard perspective. We did much better than last December with regard to staffing and on-time. Our planning and scheduling team really did a great job of putting together a solid manpower plan to ensure we'd have a sufficient number of flight attendants for the month. We also had some improved tools from ISD that helped us project reserve coverage more accurately, and our sick time usage was down substantially. The result was that understaffing was down dramatically from last year, which is great news. In fact, Christmas week went so well, scheduling was able to grant “layover wishes” to 33% of the reserves who requested a holiday layover, compared to only 18% of the requests honored last year.
Because of great teamwork and everyone doing their part, we really served the customers much better this year in terms of having adequate staffing onboard. This was good for our customers, our flight attendants and everyone who supports the operation. Thanks to all of you for doing such great work.
While things worked well for our division, there were operational challenges this season, as anyone who flew out of O'Hare is aware. This was not what we wanted to achieve from a customer service perspective and we've taken steps to prevent similar problems in the future. We've already seen an improvement in January, and we'll continue to do what is necessary to make sure we can consistently deliver a good experience to our customers overall.
Glenn Tilton said that 2006 will be all about how we execute, and the events at O'Hare are a great example of why it is so important. Executional excellence will define our company in a way that's different and it must represent the way we all work every day, no matter what our role in the company. Excellent performance is crucial if we are to successfully compete outside of bankruptcy protection, and we getting closer to that moment every day.
Last Friday we learned that all classes of creditors voted to accept our Plan of Reorganization. We're very pleased to have this support from our creditors as it further validates the work we've done to get to this point. Our commitment to reduce unnecessary cost, while improving revenue, focusing on our customers and differentiating our products and our services, is moving us in the right direction.
We should be proud of our accomplishments. Thanks to great work by employees throughout the company, we have earned the right to compete.
There are many indicators of how far we've come and as I've said before, new hires are an important symbol of our company's progress. Now, after months of preparation and hard work by many people inside and outside of our division, we're ready to train new flight attendants for the first time in four years. Students will begin arriving on arriving Sunday, January 8 and the first training class officially begins next Monday. You can learn more about the refreshed flight attendant training program in the next edition of inDetail, which will be distributed with the January 9 issue of Onboard Updates. And look for new hire training news on the Onboard homepage on SkyNet.
You may have heard that we have re-opened the flight attendant recruitment site on united.com. In this highly competitive industry it is critical that we hire only the best people possible to become United flight attendants and continue the good work that you do. In order to do that we must maintain the high standards we've set. So having worked through the existing candidate list, we're now ready to accept new applications.
By remaining focused and doing the best job possible, we successfully met the challenges we faced in 2005. I'd like to say that we can relax and take it easy for a while, but in order to keep our competitive edge we must continue to do our best every day. I'm proud to say we've got just the team to consistently deliver the travel experience our customers expect and deserve .
That's all for today. Thank you for making it a safe and successful week.
