Hello, this is Jane Allen with a special Update for Thursday, July 7, 2005.
The news of terrorist attacks in London earlier today was a harsh
reminder of the risks we face each and every day as we go about our
lives and our work around the world. Fortunately, we have no reports of
any United employees being injured or otherwise affected, and for that,
we are exceedingly grateful.
In light of today's events, it is certainly understandable that you and
your loved ones may have renewed concerns around your safety and
security. Because your safety is vitally important, we are taking some
special measures in London.
Through July 11:
· We are moving all incoming crews to a layover hotel near Heathrow
Airport. Crew IDs are being updated with new hotel information.
· Extra security staff has been put in place in Heathrow to monitor our
Cargo facility, our lobby area and our catering operation.
· There will be ongoing briefings for the next few days for flight crews.
We'll continue to do everything possible to ensure your safety and
peace of mind. Your domicile staff is available to provide you with
whatever support you need, and you can also seek assistance from EAP
through the company or the AFA. In addition, we will provide you with
any additional security information as it becomes available. Earlier
today, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raised its security
alert for mass transit only to a code orange.
As always, it is important to stay extremely aware of your surroundings
and environment, and follow the standard procedures for reporting
anything suspicious.
We routinely tell each other to "fly safe" or "travel safely". Today,
those words -- and their meaning - have a renewed sense of importance.
I know I can count on you to support each other, and to continue doing
the great job that you do to ensure the safety and security of our
airline.
My thoughts are with each and every one of you.
