It's Wednesday the first of June and I'm placing the call from Chicago.
As I'm sure all of you on the call know by now, yesterday was a very significant day for our company.
We concluded a series of difficult but essential steps for the future of United, and, as I said in my most recent call, steps that many said we could never accomplish. The agreement in principle with the IAM and AMFA's contract ratification announced yesterday are major achievements.
And, these two agreements, along with our four other union contracts, mean that we are now much closer to our goal of being a finance-able, viable and sustainable enterprise.
The work that was required to reach these agreements was extremely challenging. But working with the union leadership, we have resolved issues together, finding solutions that are based on a realistic understanding of the issues that face United and the entire airline industry today.
I want to take the opportunity of the call to personally thank the union leadership and the negotiating committees, and, of course, the team at United, who made important contributions to getting this work done. These individuals gave up their holiday weekend to get the work done, and I very much appreciate it.
We will now maintain our positive momentum, we'll continue to take on the challenges of this industry, and we will continue to do the work that has to be done for this company to be successful.
But today, we should take a moment to recognize just how far we've come together…from a company in deep financial crisis to a company doing better work for our customers and for our future together.
When I take a moment and reflect on the media coverage today, it's interesting that so many commentators now seem to be acknowledging that very same progress.
We'll continue to move ahead and focus our energy on improving our company as a place to work and providing the best possible service for our customers.
That's what companies that win in the marketplace do, and that's what we're going to continue to do together.
That's all for this call. I'll be recording again soon. Until then, stay United.
