Hello, this is Jane Allen with an Update for Friday, May 20, 2005.
I'll begin by giving you an update on number of important developments that took place this week.
As you've probably heard, on Monday United and AMFA reached a tentative agreement outside of court. The agreement consensually achieves the cost savings we need, while addressing AMFA's concerns over pay, job security, benefits and work rules. AMFA intends to conduct an electronic ratification election, and the results will be known May 31.
We've also made progress in our negotiations with the IAM. Negotiations between United and the IAM continued throughout this week though no agreement has been reached yet. Meanwhile, in bankruptcy court, Judge Wedoff heard closing arguments in the IAM 1113(c) case. He then said that the best possible outcome is consensual agreement. He will withhold a ruling on United's 1113(c) motion until May 31. If the IAM and United still haven't reached a consensual agreement by that time, he will issue a ruling.
Moving on, I want to thank everyone for their hospitality during my visit to Dulles on Thursday. I appreciated having the opportunity to meet with our flight attendants and the DCA management team, especially when so much is happening and when there is so much confusion and misinformation out there.
During my discussions with flight attendants, it became apparent that some believe if the PBGC proceeds with a termination of the Flight Attendant Pension plan, their pensions will disappear completely. This is not the case. The pension issue is extremely complex and deeply personal, and I appreciate how difficult it is for all of our employees. But I want to make it very clear that termination of the pension plans does not mean that flight attendants will receive no pension benefits at all. Instead, it means that the PBGC would assume the responsibility for making payments to all eligible plan participants, including current retirees and active employees who retire in the future, to the limits of the PBGC maximum guarantee. Thus, eligible active employees who retire in the future will get pension payments from the PBGC, in addition to payments from a replacement pension plan negotiated with the AFA.
To better understand what is happening, and how you'll be affected, I encourage you to read all of the pension information on SkyNet, including articles in NewsReal about how the PBGC plan termination process works. You can also learn more by visiting the PBGC's Web site, www.pbgc.gov and clicking on "Trusteed Information."
Finally, I want to thank everyone for remaining focused despite all of the distractions - especially this week with all of the activity in bankruptcy court attracting so much media attention. You are doing a great job! I experience your extraordinary service on every flight I take, and I hear about it from many of our customers. In fact, one customer was so impressed with Boston-based flight attendant John Finlay, that she was compelled to share her experience.
This customer wrote to thank John for his incredible service In her letter she said, "I was feeling disappointed when I boarded the plane, because my upgrade request was unsuccessful. But when we landed in Los Angeles, I honestly didn't mind so much because John had treated us so well." I also want to thank John for making this customer's flight so enjoyable. Great work!
That's all I have for today. Fly safely, and I'll talk with you again next week.
