Hello this is Jane Allen with an update for Friday, November 4, 2005 .

Without question, it's a total team effort among our flight attendants to deliver top notch service to our customers. And you do just that every day. Within the team, the purser position has evolved over the years and today's purser plays a more critical role than ever in helping to achieve our customer satisfaction and operational goals. Given our key focus on the customer and customer service, there is no doubt that pursers will continue to play a vital role as we work to transform United.

Next week, a group of qualified purser volunteers will preview the content of the local purser meetings for 2006. The updated program includes the latest corporate and division news along with a brief overview of business at United. Participants will also receive two hours of leadership skills training and the opportunity to network with fellow pursers.

The purser's role onboard the airplane is certainly very important to the success of a flight and we continue to develop our qualified pursers through initiatives like purser meetings. Yet even with the tools available to them and the skills they possess, they can't do it alone.

Equally important to a successful flight is a crew that supports the purser. Last April, a special edition of Onboard Updates focused on the partnership between the purser and the entire crew. It outlined in detail what crews can expect from the purser, and in turn, what the purser can expect from the crew.

To achieve success, crewmembers must support their purser by participating in briefings, delivering on consistency standards, knowing their job and supporting on-time objectives. However, supporting your purser is not limited to the tasks you perform. Adopting the right mind set also plays a big part in successful team.

Supportive team members accept responsibility for their own actions and for the decisions of the group. They are flexible and able to change direction midstream if necessary to support the group's greater good. They accept being part of a team and recognize that, at times, they may need to compromise some of their own individual desires for the good of the team. They view the success of their team as their own.

Whether you are a purser - qualified or unqualified – or a member of the crew, you are an essential part of the team. We know from experience that we can persevere if we all work together and remain focused on what needs to be done. It is the collective and cooperative efforts of everyone that will set us apart from the competition. After all, it's a partnership.

That's all for today. Thank you for making it a safe and successful week.
