Hello, this is Jane Allen with an Update for Friday, January 23, 2004.
As you may have heard, we announced today our intention to close our Miami domicile. We have notified AFA leaders and have briefed flight attendants, management and administrative staff in Miami.
This difficult decision was based on some significant changes to our international flying schedule announced this morning, as United moves to concentrate international flying from its hubs.
We will add three major new international routes -- Chicago-Buenos Aires, Chicago-Osaka and Dulles-Zurich to our schedule. At the same time, we will eliminate Miami-Sao Paulo and Miami-Buenos Aires, two flights that have sustained significant losses over the last year, and have rarely operated profitably since we began flying the routes. These changes will have a significant positive impact on the company's profitability and will enable us to better serve most of our customers traveling to South America.
This will strengthen what is already the world's most comprehensive route system, and reinforce the company's competitive position. We are concentrating our international flying from our hubs where we can compete most effectively, leveraging the strength of our global network and our powerful presence in key markets.
As the company moves toward exiting Chapter 11, we are making many decisions, some of them very difficult that will make United competitive, profitable and sustainable. The reality is that the decision to close a domicile is an economic one, and, unfortunately, without our South American routes, keeping the Miami Onboard domicile open simply does not make economic sense.
Please know that we are very much aware of how difficult this will be for our flight attendants, management and administrative staff who call Miami home. Be assured that we will answer their questions and provide them with the support they need. To that end, we will let our Miami flight attendants know next week what domiciles will be available to for them for transfer. We will meet with the AFA on all of this early next week, and we also will hold employee informational meetings beginning next week. We are committed to making this transition as uncomplicated as possible for the affected employees and their families, recognizing that this will be very tough for our Miami team.
That's it for today. Fly safely, and I will talk to you again next week.
