Hello, this is Glenn, and it is Wednesday, September 10, and I'm calling from World Headquarters. Tomorrow, we will join tens of millions of people around the world in a quiet reflection on the terrible tragedy that took place two years ago.
At United, we will always have a very personal connection to September 11th. In those terrorist attacks, on that terrible day, we lost 18 colleagues and the passengers on two of our aircraft. In observance of those who died in the line of duty, we will hold a ceremony and lay a wreath in the Memory Garden at World Headquarters Thursday morning.
There are events throughout the week in New York City, Massachusetts, Somerset [County], Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., to remember and contemplate all of the innocent lives lost that terrible day. The people of United will be there in spirit.
On Tuesday, United participated in a breakfast to inaugurate the Boston Public Garden Memorial Fundraising Campaign to create a permanent memorial to Massachusetts family members who died. Alex Marren [vice president-Airport Operations East], Mark Hussey [general manager-Boston Customer Service] and Sarah Lee [staff representative-Civic Affairs] attended on behalf of all of us.
This has been a very difficult and, for many, an extraordinarily emotional time, made even more challenging by numerous other external and internal factors that we've had to face. However, we have made tremendous progress on our recovery from the trauma of Sept. 11 -- emotionally and professionally as individuals and as a team. We're healing, and we're moving forward.
That does not mean that we will ever forget. We will never forget.
However, we will persevere. The people of United have always persevered, we've met the challenges that have faced us, and we've moved steadily forward. In that spirit, our company has made great strides. We are on track to re-establish this company, and its presence, as a globally competitive airline.
As I pause to reflect on the year since I arrived and the two years since September 11th, I am very encouraged by what we have achieved and how we have done so together. I think we should all be encouraged, because our progress is clear.
For those of you who cannot be with us at World Headquarters tomorrow, I urge you all to find time to devote a moment of silence in honor of those lost on September 11th, especially our 18 employees. Think also of our colleagues and friends at United who, over the years, have lost their lives in the line of service.
I'll be talking to you again next week, and until then, remain United.
