Hello. It's Glenn.
I'd like to take a moment to repeat the statement that I issued this morning on the occasion of the ratification of wage and work-rule agreements by IAM District 141, IAM District 141-M and the Association of Flight Attendants.
Four months ago we set several goals: to reach consensual agreements on cost savings with all of our unions, to improve productivity, and to lay the foundation for a more competitive, flexible and efficient airline. With today's ratifications, we've achieved all of those goals. And parallel to these efforts, we have been running an airline that customers say has improved its service considerably.
With this critical milestone behind us, we can now move quickly to implement the ratified changes in all of our labor agreements. And I want to express my personal sincere appreciation to all members of the AFA, IAM District 141 and the IAM District 141M for making the successful future of this airline, United, and ultimately the future of its employees the number one priority. I appreciate the tough choices and the sacrifices all our employees are making to help ensure United emerges from bankruptcy and succeeds for the long term.
It is indeed a significant occasion. We did announce earlier this morning the results of the final ratification votes. The AFA and the IAM Districts 141 and 141-M all ratified their agreements with the company on wage and work rule changes.
I have called each of the leaders of these three unions to thank them for their hard work and I've thanked the company's negotiating teams for their hard work.
It's now time for us to move quickly and as one organization to the next phase -- building a stronger, more durable United, one that will benefit our customers by providing solid competition in the marketplace and one that benefits our employees by offering a more secure and a more vital future.
For a number of weeks, many people in the operating divisions and other support functions have been preparing to implement the changes contained in the new agreements. We have already made significant progress. For example, flight attendants and pilots will fly the May schedule under the new work rules. More changes are going to be rolled out in the coming weeks and months, and NewsReal, along with managers and supervisors, will keep everyone informed as things come on line.
With these ratified agreements, we have made a strong statement about our company. And as we all know, we've also done something that many people thought was beyond our reach. We've reached consensual agreements on cost savings and productivity improvements with all of our represented employees, and we've confirmed the participation of our Salaried and Management group.
It's important to note that all groups -- everyone -- ratified the agreements by a wide margin. This clear support demonstrates not only the understanding throughout the workforce at United of what's needed to ensure the long-term health of the company, but it also shows our employees have a strong commitment to our getting there.
That commitment is demonstrated in many other ways for some time -- the on-time performance of United, the reliability of the operation, the safety of the operation, and the consistently improving ratings in customer service surveys.
And of course, yesterday's votes were another show of dedication.
It has taken us some time and it has taken us a lot of effort to get here. We have spent many months talking through where we are and where we need to be, and it's been time well spent.
We now need to move on to the next phase of competition. We need to focus on our competitors, and we need to focus on our customers. We need to take the same energy that we have put into this effort and focus it on the competitive marketplace.
We've all be very engaged in this process, and, once again we've proved that we have the opportunity, we have the commitment, to be truly united.
Keep your heads up, be united, and I'll be talking to you soon as events certainly develop over the next several weeks.
