Hi, it's Glenn and it's Tuesday evening, the 14th of October.
I want to take this opportunity on this special call to express my personal thanks to all United employees for the hard work that you have been doing month after month this year. Our operating results have been terrific all year long, continuing on last year's impressive success.
In fact, as we all know, the company has already surpassed last year's number of operational performance records. We had record load factors all summer long and that continued into last month. And, despite the heavy loads, you delivered the best operational performance in the company's history in September of this year. That is simply extraordinary.
To recognize these exceptional results and your dedication, your enthusiasm and your professionalism, we are setting aside October 15th to show our appreciation for your efforts.
To those of you that are in Asia-Pacific, that part of our worldwide network, you are now at the beginning of a special day and I want to be among the first to congratulate you for a job so very well done. I'd also like to take the opportunity on this call to put this performance in a different context than perhaps we normally do.
Simply put, as I meet with people around this world -- our passengers on flights, Members of Congress in Washington, D.C., business leaders, government officials all over the world -- more and more, your very best work gives me the occasion to receive their compliments on your behalf. I hear about their appreciation and, often, I hear of their surprise at what we have been able to accomplish.
As I have told many of you before in person, when I walk into a congressional office or a business leader's office or that of a government official, the first order of business is for me personally to earn the right to be heard, to have a voice. That means establishing credibility with regard to our effort to restore this airline's profitability, to get our financial house in order. On top of everything we are doing on those fronts, I am able to point to records for on-time arrivals and exceptional customer service, and say, " Not only are we bringing our financial discipline to United, this is an airline that is competing and will compete well into the future." I can assure you, that gets their attention. The facts are always compelling.
The work that you are doing thus gives United Airlines credibility. And this credibility is critical to achieve all of the things that we need to achieve in the future to become a sustainable, competitive enterprise.
But this special day is about the leadership of United, the management team and the board of directors, reaching out to each of you personally, and expressing our thanks and our appreciation for your help in earning us the right to compete in this difficult marketplace.
The operational metrics speak for themselves, but in addition to the metrics that we're all so familiar with, there's a lot of hard work being done out there in every division of this airline. Everybody is contributing to find a better way of doing things. I hear success stories every day about great ideas being implemented throughout the organization that result in process improvement, reduced cost, better operational performance, better financial performance, creative marketing -- and on and on. Just as importantly, I also hear that these great ideas are being shared across the United system.
You've heard me say this before -- we are each ambassadors for United Airlines, no matter what our job may be. When we do our best work, our customers notice, and they are responding.
Customer repurchase intent remains very high, virtually on par with last year's record-breaking ratings -- again, remarkable considering the challenges of this year.
So, today we're celebrating; and, as Pete McDonald announced yesterday, to show our appreciation, we are issuing service-charge-waived travel certificates good for two (space available) round trips to anywhere in the world for employees who were employed by the company on Oct. 15, 2003, and who are eligible for normal pass-travel benefits.
So, again, my personal congratulations for this terrific work. As you know, I'll be talking again with you as soon as possible, but this is a terrific message for me to be able to deliver today. Until I am able to get back on the phone again to talk to you or to see you in person, stay focused, stay United and congratulations.
