This week is going to be no exception. There is going to be no letup in the critical weeks ahead, and I'd like to begin this message by pointing out some of the things that we brought to the attention of the readers of the Chicago Tribune in our response to their editorial last week.
Let me quote, if I could. A Tribune editorial on Wednesday said that it was "time to force change at United." What it overlooked, however, were the major strides that United has already made and the changes that we continue to make.
I can assure you that nobody understands and embraces the need for change more completely than the management and employees at United. But perhaps this is the most important paragraph that I sent to the Tribune in the letter:
"But while we have already done a lot to make United stronger, we recognize that these changes are not enough, given the state of the industry and the issues facing our company in this post-9/11 environment. Since Labor Day, we have seen unprecedented cooperation between United and its unions -- and (indeed) among the unions themselves -- to find major new savings. And, last week, we reached a groundbreaking agreement on a framework for an additional 5.8 billion dollars in labor cost reductions."
In the days and weeks ahead, we need to make our case for a successful and prosperous United. And we all need to display and express our personal confidence in everything that we do, such as sustaining our exceptional and competitive operational performance, and adding our personal voices to all of those who are already participating in the grassroots support of United's ATSB updated application.
Remember, each of us represents a significant component of the updated material itself, in the form of our confident conclusion that together, we can do this, and together, we will.
Thanks very much, it's going to be a very busy week as I have said, and the weeks ahead are going to be intense and full of news as we move forward toward the conclusion of our review with the ATSB. Thanks very much and I look forward to talking to you again soon.
