Over the past several weeks there has been considerable discussion “on the line”, much of it inaccurate, about Group Universal Life Insurance coverage negotiated under the terms of our Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA).  Our MEC Benefits Committee and our Local Union offices have been fielding calls and questions addressing what many are describing as unauthorized deductions that were taken for “more than one year” for Group Universal Life Insurance coverage.

By way of background, prior to ratification of the JCBA and under the terms of the pmCAL Contract, pmCAL Flight Attendants were enrolled in a contributory term life insurance. Triggered by the language in the new contract and during the 2016 Open Enrollment for our 2017 Benefits, all Flight Attendants were moved to a common benefit platform and life insurance benefits were established under the terms of the JCBA.

Flight Attendants were advised as part of the 2016 Annual Open Enrollment period, effective January 1, 2017, those enrolled in the pmCAL contributory term life programs would be moved to the GUL coverage.  Flight Attendants were also advised as part of the Annual Open Enrollment in 2016 (for 2017 Benefits Coverage) of their ability to dis-enroll if they did not want to continue with the GUL Coverage.  The 2017 Annual Enrollment Guide advised the Membership:

“Effective January 1, 2017, all voluntary life insurance that you have in force on yourself, your spouse/domestic partner, and your child(ren) will be GUL coverage with Securian….”

In addition to the above referenced notification in the Open Enrollment packet, letters were sent to pmCAL Flight Attendants & Crossover participants in September 2016, prior to the Annual Open Enrollment period, alerting them to the upcoming change.

We understand that there are a number of questions from the Membership on this issue.   It is critical to understand that the benefit levels provided under the GUL coverage are different from the predecessor Contributory Term Life insurance coverage.  This is a negotiated benefit that covers all Flight Attendants.  If you have questions regarding your GUL coverage, you are strongly encouraged to contact Securian at 866 877 1043 for additional assistance and a full explanation of your coverage options.
