The company announced yesterday the decision to move the 787 flying currently assigned at IAH to IAD effective with the start of the Winter 2017 - 2018 schedule at the end of October.

The changes include the following:

These changes will impact our Members in IAH and IAD despite United’s clear message there is no plan to reduce the international schedule.  For the winter schedule, United will fly IAD to CDG, GRU, PEK and LHR using a 787 aircraft flown by Flight Attendants working under the scheduling provisions of the pre-merger CAL Agreement.

As the company continues to work to maximize fleet utilization and better match passenger demand to the size of the aircraft in the market, these changes will continue to impact all of our Members.  While our focus, as well as that of United management, continues to be on implementation of our Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) as quickly as possible in an effort to avoid this impact to the Membership when these metal swaps occur, it cannot be denied that these changes are significant. At the same time, we’re talking about one fleet of aircraft and we are not seeing the total impact as a result of changes with other fleet types.  We will continue to press the company to provide Flight Attendants with more information to assist in understanding the complete competitive picture.

It should be noted that the company, as part of its announced plan not to fly the 787 from Houston, acknowledged Pilot displacements from Houston will occur as a result of this decision.  Overall, while management acknowledges the adverse impact the schedule changes have on Flight Attendants and Pilots, they remain optimistic that these changes are necessary to grow our airline while we use resources efficiently in our continued quest to become the world’s best airline.
