This week in United’s Inflight Services Weekly (ISW), management announced upcoming flying changes at Houston (IAH) as a result of the expected deliveries of the Boeing 787-900 aircraft.  In addition to the ISW, the domicile manager at IAH sent an e-mail to all pre-merger United Flight Attendants advising them of this impending change.  The nature and timing of these announcements has created an elevated level of concern for our Members based in Houston.

What must be stressed is that these changes are not effective immediately.  The aircraft changes will be implemented over time based on the following schedule:

Schedule Month

787 Market

August 2015

IAH to GIG

September 2015

IAH to FRA

October 2015

IAH to EZE

December 2015

IAH to AMS

January 2016

IAH to SCL

The statement, “International flying currently assigned to [pre-merger United] IAH Flight Attendants will be replaced with domestic flying” which was included as part of the company’s announcement has been misunderstood. Not all international flying assigned at Houston is being replaced with domestic flying. In fact, in this most recent plan flying to LIM, HNL, Central America and destinations in Mexico, will continue to be assigned to pre-merger United Flight Attendants. We are told this statement was included to reassure Flight Attendants currently based in Houston that the company has no plans to surplus anyone from the domicile.

The pre-merger United aircraft currently assigned to these IAH routes will be re-deployed to serve markets from EWR.  Specifically, the EWR to Berlin (TXL), Hamburg (HAM) and Madrid (MAD) markets.  However, to support the summer start of the Berlin service and the fall start of Hamburg and Madrid, other aircraft from around the system, including maintenance and reconfiguration lines, will initially be used for this flying.  Initially, the EWR-MAD service will be assigned on the CAL 767-400 aircraft.

What should be considered is that some of the flying changes proposed by management in the past have not always come to fruition. We encourage everyone to not only review the dates of these proposed changes but to carefully consider any decision to transfer to another location to “chase the flying.”  As we all well know, flying is liquid and changes frequently.  Throughout our history, we have come to understand that no one location “owns” any particular flying.  We must all guard against making impulsive or reactionary changes.
