Medical Benefits Transition to Aetna

As you know, as of January 1, the administration of our medical PPO insurance benefits transitioned from Blue Cross to Aetna.  By now, you should have received your new health insurance card from Aetna which will have a new Member ID and Group number.  The cards were sent to the permanent address of record on file with United.  If you have not yet received your card, you should contact Aetna at 800 231 7729 to request a replacement.  If you are in need of an immediate, temporary card for any medical issues, representatives can instruct you on how to do so.

As with any transition of vendor, sometimes there are issues that come up and need to be corrected.  But it's important to remember, that our benefits are Contractual and have not changed.  If you run into a situation where a service or benefit is being challenged or denied by Aetna, which has previously been approved, you should document and follow up by e-mail to insurance@unitedafa.org.

An additional consideration for those who are continuing to receive medical services from a doctor with whom you maintain regular office visits, and who has previously used your BCBS information when billing for services, keep in mind that any visits after January 1, 2014 will need to be billed to Aetna and the new insurance information should be provided to the medical office.
