United Airlines has announced plans to lay off 472 workers at Newark Liberty International Airport in March.

The airline, which completed its acquisition of Continental Airlines 10 months ago, reported the layoffs in a letter to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

United reported the cuts in line with the federal WARN Act, which requires companies in certain situations to give employees and authorities 60 days notice of a layoff.

The $3 billion merger, first announced in October 2010, created the nation's largest carrier, with 86,000 employees and about 1,200 jets.
