Several months ago, we published a research involvement form on Jumpseatnews to assist the FAMRI Bland Lane Center of Excellence on Secondhand Smoke at UCSF in a study on the association between respiratory illnesses and secondhand smoke exposure in flight attendants.
Their study is now complete and they have shared the results of their findings with us. They found that flight attendants exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased prevalence of respiratory illnesses.

From their recent letter to JSN:
We are excited that we have recently published a summary of our findings from you and your colleagues’ studies and want to share them with you. Please find attached ‘Associations between respiratory illnesses and secondhand smoke exposure in flight attendants’. These data were collected from our questionnaires between 2006 and 2010 about flight attendants’ medical history, smoking history, and secondhand smoke exposure. We found that flight attendants exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased prevalence of respiratory illnesses. In addition, please feel free to post this article: http://www.examiner.com/healthy-travel-in-national/flight-crew-and-secondhand-smoke-research-reveals-respiratory-illness-prominent
We would like to thank all the flight attendants who filled out this questionnaire as that allows them to do this important research on flight attendant health. Please contact the center if you have any questions or suggestions. They can be reached by email at [email protected].
A special thanks to all JSN readers who took part in this study.
Sincerely,
Christopher
