Section 4.K. of our Contract provides guidelines for tidying.

4.K.     Airplane Tidying
A Flight Attendant's duties shall include the tidying of aircraft in flight and on through flights. Flight Attendants may be required to perform additional responsibilities beyond tidying, such as trash pick-up and maintaining a neat cabin appearance throughout the trip sequence. Such duties may also include picking up supplies or depositing trash on the boarding device (e.g., jet bridge), but Flight Attendants shall not be required to perform these duties at the termination of a duty day. On terminating flights and flight segments scheduled for three (3) hours or more duration, Flight Attendants shall not be required to perform any tidying duties after terminating passengers have deplaned. A Flight Attendant's duties shall not include the cleaning of any aircraft.

Tidying, Not Cleaning

Flight Attendants are not required to clean the airplanes.  Flight Attendants do not clean tray tables, reach into seat pockets, clean toilets or do anything that will jeopardize our safety.

Scope of Tidying

We keep the cabin tidy by picking up visible litter throughout the flight.  We make announcements to ask passengers to pass the newspapers and other trash to the aisle for collection.  Announcements of this type started when we had the Shuttle but it was carried over to the mainline without management requesting it.

Tidying may include placing trash bags on the jet bridge and/or retrieving cabin supplies from the jet bridge.  We do not, however, violate the SCOPE CLAUSE of any other labor groups.

Tidying at Conclusion of Flight

On terminating flights and flight segments over 3 hours we tidy until the last passenger has deplaned and on through flights scheduled less than 3 hours we tidy to completion.

No Difference for TED Flights

Tidying duties are the same for TED flights.  On August 14, 2007 an arbitrator ruled in favor of AFA and confirmed that there is no difference between tidying on mainline and TED flights.
