Our Contract Section 8.H. provides for holding pay both before and after a flight.

8.H.     Holding Time
Flight Attendants shall receive one-half (1/2) credit for pay purposes, including premium pay and language pay when applicable, on an actual minute basis for all holding time, in excess of ten (10) minutes beyond scheduled ground time or block arrival time.

Start of a Flight

At the start of a flight, holding time is credited when passengers are on board and the departure is delayed by more than ten (10) minutes.

Middle of a Duty Period – Same Flights

In the middle of a duty period while working both the inbound and outbound on the same flight, holding time is credited when passengers are on board and holding extends more than 10 minutes beyond scheduled or actual arrival time of the inbound flight, whichever is later.  If passengers have remained on board the entire time, holding ends when passenger boarding begins for the outbound flight.  In addition, holding is credited when passengers are on board and the departure of the outbound flight is delayed by more than 10 minutes.

Middle of a Duty Period – Different Flights

In the middle of a duty period when working different inbound and outbound flights, holding time is credited when passengers are on board and holding extends more than 10 minutes beyond scheduled or actual arrival time of the inbound flight, whichever is later.  If passengers have remained on board the entire time, holding ends when the outbound crew relieves the inbound crew, and if a Flight Attendant is part of the inbound crew and passengers have remained on board the entire time, holding ends for that crewmember when passenger boarding begins for the outbound flight.  The outbound crew is eligible for holding when passengers are on board and the departure of the outbound flight is delayed by more than 10 minutes.

Unscheduled Stop Holding

If passenger egress is available at an unscheduled stop, holding time credit begins when passengers are on board more than 10 minutes after arrival of the unscheduled stop.  Remember though that when there is no passenger egress, flight time continues according to Contract Section 2.P. and the crew desk needs to be contacted as soon as possible to update the Flight Attendant DSPID.

End of a Duty Period

At the end of a duty period holding time is credited when passengers are on board at the gate more than 10 minutes beyond scheduled or actual arrival, whichever is later.  Holding time under this condition stops when passengers begin deplaning.  However, if the crew is required to remain on board to wait, for example, for a wheelchair, holding time will be credited starting from ten (10) minutes beyond scheduled or actual arrival, whichever is later, until the wheelchair arrives.

Return to Blocks Holding

If flight attendants are eligible for holding credit due to a flight departing more than 10 minutes after the scheduled departure time and thereafter the flight returns to the blocks and additional holding occurs, the Flight Attendants are not subject to another 10 minutes of “free” holding – holding begins immediately.

Extending Duty Period Guarantees

Holding time can also extend your duty period.  When a flight attendant holds beyond the time she/he otherwise would have gone off duty, Section 8.A. provides 1 hour of pay and credit for 2 every two hours of duty time will be recalculated at the end of the holding time.  In addition, Section 8.B. that provides 1 hour flight time for every 3 1/2 hours away from home will be similarly recalculated when ending the duty period at the home domicile.

Flight Attendant(s) must contact OPBSK before leaving so that the crew scheduler can update the release from duty to ensure correct legal rest applications.

Documentation

In order to be paid for your holding time, document holding for each flight in your DSPFAC.
