There are a variety of settings to review in Internet Explorer (IE) to ensure the PC has the optimal configuration for use of the Learning Network (LN).

Cache

If a problem is occurring, clearing the cache may clean out the offending item

  1. While in IE, click on Tools, then Internet Options. A window opens up where we can check on the settings.
  2. Click on Advanced tab (top right corner). Scroll to the bottom. Under the Security heading, find the item called “Do not save encrypted pages to disk”. It needs to be unchecked. Right below it is “Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed”. This should also be unchecked.
  3. Click back on the General tab (top left corner). Click on Delete Files button. Click on OK. When deletion is complete, click OK to exit Internet Options.
  4. Close IE browser and do Start, Shutdown & Restart of the PC.

The above actions alone may clear up the error condition. If not, follow these additional steps.

Courseware Loading

Sometimes even after the Cache settings are adjusted per above, once the student Launches a course, the window that opens up will indicate “Courseware Loading …” and never progress. If this window remains up for more than 3 minutes, do not continue to wait! Close the window. Click once more on the Launch link to restart the lesson. Do this before closing IE. Usually the lesson will load and continue quickly after this.

Plug-ins

Certain software plug-ins must be installed in order for the LN lessons to function. You may check the status of which plug-ins and what versions are installed.

  1. While in IE, click on Tools, then Internet Options. A window opens up where we will proceed.
  2. Click on Settings button (center right). Click on View Objects button. A separate window will open up.
  3. This window contains columns of information on the plug-ins installed. In the left-most column, look for an entry named Shockwave Flash.
    • a. If it does not exist, the Flash Player must be installed, instructions below.
    • If it does exist, scroll to the right-most column and look for the version number. The one we want to see is 7,0,19,0. If it is version 6, we will also want to install the Flash Player as listed below to upgrade.
    • If it is version 8 and the PC is Windows NT, you will want to Remove and re-install the Flash Player to use version 7. To Remove, right-click on the words “Shockwave Flash” in the list of Program Files and select Remove, confirming that you want to uninstall.
    • If the PC is Windows XP, also look for entries in the list for Java Runtime. If there are none, you will want to install the free software found at website Java.com. If there is a Java entry listed, check the status column and see if an entry says Damaged instead of Installed. If Damaged, right-click on the Java entry and select Remove, confirming that you want to remove it.
  4. Close the window of plug-ins. Click OK to close the Settings window. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Install Flash

The Learning Network has a Help page where certified downloads are available. The most commonly needed plug-in is the Flash Player.

You can get to the Learning Network Help Center page in three ways:

  1. If you are in the Learning Network, click on the Help? link at the bottom of the page.
  2. From Skynet home page, click on Employee Services/PeopleNet (top center), then click on Help Center (left side).
  3. Click on this link.

Once in the Help Center, click on Downloads (left), then Flash player (right). Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Install Now button. Large words indicating Flash Installation successful will scroll onto page when it is complete. It may display a confirming prompt, asking if you wish to install. Answer Yes. Close Help Center window when completed.

Install Java

Earlier Windows operating systems had Java functionality built-in. Windows XP operating system does not come with Java pre-installed. Many LN lessons require use of Java. This is not available from the LN Help Center page.

From IE browser, in the Address field type java.com and press Enter key. The first thing on Java’s web page is Java Free Software Download. Click on Download Now button to start the download process. Follow the prompts to download and install the software.

Restricted PC/Administrator rights

Occasionally, the PC security is setup to restrict the user from doing installations. In that case, contact the United Help Desk at U700-5800 and have them open a service ticket so a technician can come and sign-on in an administrative mode in order to do the installations.
