United Begins Four Groups of Boarding

Beginning June 10, CSRs will board passengers in four groups: 1, 2, 3 and 4.  In other words, no more boarding by row number.

United states that this new boarding process will be "up to 30 percent faster."

Here's how it works:  Apollo will automatically assign and print seating areas in large, bold text on each boarding pass.   The four different 'boarding groups' will be:

  1. All premium passengers (Premiers, 1K, 1P, 2P, Star Gold and Silver, and US Airways Chairman's Preferred passengers)
  2. Economy Plus passengers
  3. Passengers seated in the last 10 rows of Economy
  4. All remaining passengers

During the boarding process, United First, Business and Global Services passengers are allowed to board at any time.  According to today's NewsReal, "For various reasons -- such as airport, facilities and cultural differences -- some
international locations will continue to board using their local processes."

It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable improvement.  The #1 time waster will always continue to be carry-on baggage; with people blocking the aisles as they adjust items in the overhead bins.

I also wonder if the last 10 rows of Economy will begin to receive special requests, much the same as exit rows or bulkhead rows do.
