As we continue to work together to meet the service standards set by management as well as the expectations of the passengers in our care, we shouldn’t be surprised when differences in opinion on how the service standards will be executed.  Of course, these differences in opinion can be the cause of disagreement onboard the aircraft – a situation that all of us clearly seek to avoid.  We recommend, when differences arise, that everyone involved makes a dedicated effort to talk through any disagreements.  If disagreements cannot be resolved through discussion, we recommend that all service be completed according the standards set by management.  If you need assistance, we always recommend that you reach out to our peer Employee Assistance representatives for guidance and support.

We continue to see an increase in the number of reports from Flight Attendants to management detailing personal conflicts with fellow employees rather than trying to resolve issues with the assistance of our Union EAP/Professional Standards peer professionals.

What cannot be overlooked and must be understood is this; when you go to management to report a flying partner or another airline employee, the consequences can be severe.  You should be aware and may even be surprised to learn that these events rarely turn out as you might expect they would.

The Professional Standards component of AFA EAP exists to assist Flight Attendants in any area that affects professional conduct. As part of AFA’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP), we have trained Professional Standards volunteers available to you in every Local Council. After listening to your concerns, EAP representatives will follow up on the situation and pursue the appropriate action necessary.  It is imperative that Flight Attendants stand together, take care of one another and always contact the “Union First”. Your EAP / Professional Standards representatives are available at unitedafa.org or by calling the International Help line at: 1-800-424-2406. All services are confidential.

Additional information on this very important issue can be found on Unitedafa.org.
