It was announced today that United Airlines has suspended the entire Sick Leave Travel Policy for "further review".

Apparently, Glenn Tilton made the final decision to suspend the policy; probably making a few of the old guard over at WHQ less than pleased!  Ha ha ha!  Live with it.

It will be very interesting to read the WHQ version of what happened and what, if any, stipulations may be in place during this suspension period.

In the meantime, here's the complete announcement as reported on www.unitedafa.org this morning:

"After months of working together to oppose United’s No Travel While on Sick Leave Policy, today Glenn Tilton has taken a bold step indicative of a new vision for United Airlines by suspending the entire policy for further review. With this action, our CEO demonstrates that he understands and respects the importance of improving labor management relations for the success and transformation of our Company.

United initially stated that the policy was put into place to reduce sick leave, but failed to recognize that such policy would not dissuade a woman from giving birth, would not reduce the in fortuitous event of a Flight Attendant injured on the job, and would not change the unwelcome life-challenging event of a terminal illness or accidental medical injury. We thank all of you who helped us to portray the real-life consequences of the No Travel While on Sick Leave Policy.

The few employees who choose to abuse our benefits should not be the benchmark for a Company-wide policy, punishing and dejecting the majority who would otherwise act with enthusiastic devotion to the success of our airline. The dedication of United Airlines Flight Attendants and other employees allowed our airline to survive its most precarious state in our long history. We objected to this policy because it suggests that these same dedicated employees abuse the benefits we are afforded, which in turn disenfranchised and demoralized United’s greatest asset. We made heavy sacrifices for the success of our Company, and we could not accept a policy that put that success in jeopardy.

Glenn Tilton’s leadership today represents his promised new direction for United, which will restore our airline to premier status in the industry. His actions confirm that United Airlines intends to stand apart from the rest of the industry by respecting its dedicated employees and employee choices that are critical to United’s success.
We applaud Glenn Tilton and welcome a new United."

Details will be added to this story as soon as they are known.  Stay tuned!
