One-Day Trips and Turns are on the Rise

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that one-day trips have increased everywhere.  The system-wide percentage of one-day trips rose from 26% in December 2002 to 35% in August 2003.  This is Crappy or Great, depending on your preferences for per diem and/or layover hotels.

Turns are on the rise: In August alone, there are 15% more turns than last year at this time.  This information comes from United's Scheduling Outlook for August.  Here's some other information from that same publication concerning those lovely new DUTY TIME MAXIMUMS:

Since May, the drivers appear to be the new maximum duty time and the 8:30 in 24 exception for two-segment, single-duty period turns. For example, 56 of the 129 one-day trips in August would not have been possible prior to the change in duty max (13 hours scheduled). More multi-segment one-day trips are now possible -- 73 of the 129 contain three or more flights. Within those 129 one-day trips, there are 22 ORD-West/DEN-East IDs that now can be scheduled up to 8:30 flight time.

I'm glad they are again producing 'Scheduling Outlook'.  There hadn't been an issue since March 2003, and it really is one of the most useful publications from Onboard Service.  There cannot be enough information, tutorials, and resources concerning flight attendant scheduling.  It is one of the most complex, confusing, misunderstood, and many times frustrating aspects of the job.
