Okay, so the IBS now says: “Due to Operation Iraqi Freedom, we recommend that you immediately remove all crew identifiers from your luggage or handbags (i.e., orange crew tags, AFA crew bag tags, etc.). For additional security details, please refer to the March 17 issue of security updates.”

AFA even stated in yesterday's e-lines publication:

We have heard some concern over the company’s suggestion to remove AFA crew tags. This announcement was suggested by AFA, particularly for crews flying to International destinations. It is not required that any crew member remove your crew tags, but it is prudent during this international conflict to minimize recognition of crew members and crew member belongings.

One reader wrote in to suggest that we just wear a bright yellow raincoat over everything and be done with it.  Another suggested that we strip butt naked and remove all traces of uniform clothing from out bodies.  Interesting idea...  They'll probably do that one in A View From the Top II.

Regardless, the best supplement to ensure our safety (barring the butt-naked technique and others mentioned above) is to use common sense.  Use it like you never have before.  It isn't just crewmembers that should exercise caution when traveling abroad; it's anyone.  There are people here and abroad none too happy with what is happening in Iraq, so why draw attention to yourself?

Removing crew tags, labels, pins, uniform stripes (oops, they did that one already), ID cards, etc... will only get you so far.  Common sense and cultural sensitivity will travel the remaining distance.  Now more than ever.
