Despite how gung-ho United has been with the Tasers in DS1 training, the reality of the matter is that the airline does not yet have permission for the pilots to use them onboard the planes.

The company's security chief is meeting with U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta today in Washington to 'discuss' obtaining the approval.  Mineta is certainly the man to talk to about this this because Congress authorizes him to approve or disapprove the use of Tasers.

Regardless of the outcome of their meeting, there are a couple of other security changes being working on right now:

United is installing a prototype cockpit door this week on one of the Boeing 737-300s and 747s.  In addition, the Airbus fleet also has been certified and is scheduled for prototype door installation Aug. 5.  These new doors will feature electronic locks, reinforced hinges and keypad entry codes.  They will cost approximately $22,000 each, depending on the aircraft.  The FAA said each airline will receive approximately $13,000 per aircraft to help pay for the security improvements.
