Ruling Announced: No Guns Allowed in the Cockpit

Check out the these three paragraphs from yesterday's Reuters news report:

The Bush administration said on Tuesday it would not allow commercial pilots to carry firearms in the cockpit as a last line of defense against potential hijackers, but powerful Republican lawmakers vowed to have the last word.

John Magaw, director of the Transportation Security Administration, told the Senate Commerce Committee current airport and airline security upgrades were adequate and lethal force would not be permitted.

The nation's airlines applauded the decision, but big pilots unions were furious and vowed to intensify lobbying efforts on legislation proposed in both houses of Congress.

This was a good decision.  The pilots should not be permitted to carry devices that fire hot lead at high speeds inside our aircraft.  Nothing whatsoever against our pilots; they looked like they enjoyed the TASER demonstration on the DS1 video.  But firing guns inside of a speeding, pressurized vessel at 35,000 feet (by the same people supposed to be flying it) is another story altogether.

How do you feel about this?  Here's what you said some months ago when we conducted two different JSN polls on this issue:

Do you believe the pilots should be allowed to carry guns onboard?

Yes.
19.4% (25)
No.
80.6% (104)
Total votes: 129

Should our pilots be provided stun guns?

Yes.
46.9% (114)
No.
44.4% (108)
Not sure.
8.6% (21)

Total votes: 243
