You!  With the yellow specimen cup!  Empty your pockets!

Beginning August 1, there is a new procedure for all random D.O.T. ( U.S. Department of Transportation) drug testing.  In addition to providing a urine specimen, you will now also be required to empty the contents of your pockets and display them to the collector.

The following announcement was issued today by AFA and is as follows:

Effective August 1, 2001 please be aware of a new change in procedures for all random D.O.T. ( U.S. Department of Transportation) drug tests. At the collection site you will be instructed to empty your pockets and display the items in them to the collector. If the collector finds any materials that could be used to tamper with a urine specimen, the collector will determine if the material appears to be brought to the collection site with the intent to alter the urine specimen. If so, the collector will conduct a directly observed collection of your urine specimen using standard direct observation procedures (observer will be same sex). If, however, the collector determines that the material appears to be inadvertently brought to the collection site, the collector will secure and maintain the materials until the collection process is completed and the collector will conduct a normal, unobserved collection.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU REFUSE TO COMPLY WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS TO EMPTY YOUR POCKETS, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED A REFUSAL TO TEST AND YOU WILL BE PROHIBITED FROM PERFORMING SAFETY SENSITIVE DUTIES UNTIL ALL DOT REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN MET. YOU MAY ALSO SUBJECT YOURSELF TO DISCIPLINE UP TO AND INCLUDING DISCHARGE.

Please contact your local AFA representatives if you have any questions or need additional information.
