Baggage templates...those lovely devices that passengers (and airlines) routinely ignore by simply lifting up the cover so their kitchen sink can fit through.
Continental Airlines just won a lawsuit against United Airlines and the Dulles Airport Airline Management Council yesterday. Continental claimed (rightly so) that the templates installed by United (and approved by IAD airport) violated federal antitrust laws by forcing all carriers' passengers to be restricted by United's carry-on policy. Since you have to pass through the United-designed templates at IAD to get to a Continental gate, I can see where this makes sense.
Apparently, Continental had implemented a "friendlier carry-on baggage policy" that allows for larger overhead bins on their aircraft to handle the increased passenger carry-on luggage. Although United's templates were an excellent idea for the few short months they were actually enforced, no one specific airline should be allowed to police an entire airport. Regardless, Continental told the press that a court order is soon to come specifying monetary damages. How those attorneys will figure that out is beyond me...but I'm sure they'll find a way! United's lawyers, of course, are "considering an appeal".
