'The Word' is a new video display system that United Airlines plans to install at the gate check-in counters in all of its hub airports by the end of 2001.  The video display will provide the following information:

  1. The flight's departure status, duration and estimated time of arrival.
  2. A countdown to the flight's boarding time.
  3. Information on the arriving aircraft.
  4. The number of Mileage Plus miles that passengers will earn on the flight.
  5. The current weather at the destination.
  6. Upgrade eligibility.
  7. Number of Pig animals allowed in First Class.

I'm kidding about #7!  But seriously, this is a great idea on management's part because it will reduce the number of questions fired off at the gate agents during check-in.  This will also be good during irregular operations because the displays can be used to let people know what's going on with their flight.  All of the data on 'The Word' will be automatically updated every 60 seconds

Speaking of irregular operations, where do you think these new displays will first be deployed?  You guessed it, Camp O'Hare.

By the way, 'The Word' is not going to be the permanent name for this display system.  The company plans to release the 'official' name in January.
