Over the years, we have come to expect dedicated crew lines when going through customs and immigration, however in February of this year United explained in one of their publications that with the recent government cuts and push towards automation they are seeing more and more airports removing these lanes.  While not having a dedicated crew line is not a violation of our Contract, we do have language in our Contract that provides for extension of duty time in unusual circumstances. When Flight Attendants’ are unable get through Customs and Immigration in the allotted 30 minutes provided in Section 7.I.3. can be some of those unusual circumstances.

Flight Attendants will be considered on duty until the following:

  • When away from home domicile - fifteen (15) minutes after flight block in
  • When at home domicile - thirty (30) minutes after flight block in
  • After deadheading
    • away from home domicile - after flight block in
    • at home domicile - fifteen (15) minutes after flight block in

If your final assignment requires you to go through customs, your duty time will be extended thirty (30) minutes and you will be considered on duty until the following:

  • Away from home domicile - forty-five (45) minutes after flight block in
  • At home domicile – sixty (60) minutes or 1 hour after flight block in
  • After deadheading
    • away from home domicile - thirty (30) minutes after flight block in
    • at home domicile - forty-five (45) minutes after flight block in

If your customs check is extended due to unusual circumstances you will need to notify Crew Scheduling so that your duty time can be extended accordingly.

As an additional protection, on international IDs, please keep in mind we have language that protects our Legal Rest through an ‘at hotel’ minimum layover requirement at our place of lodging.  The length of the ‘at hotel’ minimum is based on flight/deadhead time in the last duty period (Section 12.M.1.)

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Local Council.
