United announced in Onboard Updates that Flight Attendant Scheduling and Support (FASS) will, on a monthly basis, evaluate reserve coverage and increase trip trade for open flying allocations accordingly.  Our contract provision (9.G.4.) requires the daily allocation to be at least 3% of the active flight attendant population, up to a maximum of 70 slots.

Over the last few months, FASS has been testing this new system.  This past May, the allocations were increased by an average of 33%.

According to Onboard Updates, here's how the process will work:

  • The day before the first run of trip trades for open flying in the new schedule month, FASS will evaluate the open trips and reserve coverage. If there is adequate coverage, the trade allocations will be increased. Increases may be for specific days within the new month.  You can view the allocation amounts via DSPOPN command. Be sure to also know the Trip Trade with Open Flying processing dates.
  • Each Tuesday during the schedule month, FASS will reevaluate the allocations. If possible, they will again be increased.

If a trade is rejected because it exceeds the open allotment and the allocation is later increased, you must enter a new request for the trade to be reconsidered.
